California Man Wearing an Ankle Monitor Tried To Rob Another House—Faces Life In Prison
An idiot in California broke into someone's home while wearing an ankle monitor.
Serial Burglar Strikes Again—But Leaves Empty-Handed
A 40-year-old man in Ventura County is now facing the possibility of life behind bars after breaking into two homes while already on parole—and wearing a state-issued ankle monitor, officials confirmed.
Matthew Rey Scott, a repeat offender with prior first-degree burglary convictions in 2007 and 2015, was out on parole when he allegedly decided to continue his life of crime. However, his latest attempts in December 2024 didn’t go quite as planned.
One homeowner, who happened to be on the phone, spotted Scott standing in her hallway. Instead of making off with valuables, he made a quick exit after the woman confronted him, asking what he was doing there. Meanwhile, the person on the other end of the phone dialed the police.
Caught on Camera, Caught by Cops
Undeterred by his unsuccessful first attempt, Scott wandered two blocks away and entered a second home through the garage—this time with a young family inside. Unfortunately for him, home surveillance cameras caught him moving through the garage and backyard.
Police quickly responded, and despite Scott’s attempt to flee, officers found him just three streets away. He was still sporting his ankle monitor, which, ironically, made him easier to track than a lost iPhone.
Third Strike Means Life Behind Bars
On March 26, a jury convicted Scott on two felony counts of first-degree burglary, along with resisting arrest and evading officers. Since the break-ins occurred while residents were home, he was also found guilty of committing a violent felony.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Craig Gardner praised the victims and witnesses who testified, noting their role in bringing Scott to justice—not just in this case, but in multiple past incidents.
Now, with his third strike, Scott faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. No word yet on when his sentencing will be, but at least this time, authorities won’t need GPS to find him.
