It's stories like these that make me question the power of social media...

In case you missed it, last week a teenage girl posted a video to Instagram of her doing something that has social media users FIRED UP. She opened up a container of Blue Bell Ice Cream at the grocery store, licked the top of the ice cream, and then put the lid back on and walked away. The video went viral, and most people seemed disgusted by the act, but there were others who decided to jump on the trend and post videos of their own.

According to the New York Times, Blue Bell was able to identify the store featured in the original video, which turned out to be a Walmart in Lufkin, Texas. They then removed every container of the flavor of ice cream that was tampered with, just to be safe. Police were able to identify the girl from the video, but she's only 17 so her name was not released to the public.

Since the original incident, copycats have been posting their own videos, and one of those copycats is now in jail. 36-year-old Lenise Lloyd Martin III posted his own ice cream-licking video to Facebook and was then arrested by Louisiana police. He doesn't think he did anything wrong, though, because he purchased the ice cream after posting the video. The New York Times reports:

"Mr. Martin was charged with criminal mischief for tampering with a product before he had purchased it, and with 'unlawful posting of criminal activity for notoriety and publicity.'"

In the mean time, Blue Bell Ice Cream is considering making some changes to their packaging:
