North Carolina’s Favorite Chips Recalled Due to Undeclared Milk Allergy Risk
Frito-Lay is voluntarily recalling a limited batch of 13-ounce bags, which may contain undeclared milk.
Frito-Lay has announced a voluntary recall of certain 13-ounce bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips over concerns that they may contain undeclared milk, posing a serious risk to individuals with milk allergies. The recall was issued after a customer alerted the company to the potential issue in December, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) later upgraded the recall to a “Class 1” alert—its most urgent classification—due to the life-threatening nature of the risk.
According to the FDA, anyone with a milk allergy or severe milk sensitivity could face a potentially fatal allergic reaction after consuming the affected chips. The recall specifically targets bags with the date of February 11, along with manufacturing codes of “6462307xx” or “6463307xx.”
Severe Health Risks for Allergy Sufferers
Milk is one of the eight major allergens that must be declared on food packaging, and its presence in a product without proper labeling can have serious consequences. For consumers with milk allergies, even small amounts of the allergen can lead to reactions such as hives, cramps, difficulty breathing, or even unconsciousness. The FDA’s classification of this recall as “Class 1” emphasizes the severity of the situation and the potential for fatal outcomes if these products are consumed by sensitive individuals.
No Known Allergic Reactions Reported
Frito-Lay has confirmed that, as of now, no allergic reactions related to this recall have been reported. However, the company has strongly advised consumers in Washington and Oregon who purchased the affected chips to dispose of them immediately, especially if anyone in their household is allergic to milk. The recall only impacts a specific batch of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips, so other products, including different flavors, sizes, and variety packs, are not affected.
Wider Problem of Undeclared Allergens in Food
This recall is part of an ongoing trend of undeclared allergens causing food safety concerns. In recent weeks, several other products—ranging from granola bars to pancake mixes—have been recalled for containing undeclared milk or other allergens like soy, wheat, and eggs. The FDA continues to monitor these issues and has urged manufacturers to improve labeling practices to prevent such incidents from occurring.
What Affected Consumers Should Do
Consumers who may have purchased the recalled bags of Lay’s chips should check the date and manufacturing codes on the package. If they match the recall details, the chips should be discarded immediately. For refunds or more information, consumers can contact Frito-Lay directly or return the product to the place of purchase.
