This major relator has been systematically reducing its retail footprint, closing over 200 stores in the process. Continuing this trend, the company announced plans to shutter eight additional locations by mid-2025, including one store in North Carolina.

JCPenney's Ongoing Battle to Stay Afloat

One of the biggest casualties of the retail shift has been JCPenney. The department store giant, which once dominated shopping malls nationwide, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020 amid financial struggles exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Following its bankruptcy filing, JCPenney shuttered roughly 200 stores, dropping its total count from over 800 to just over 600.

In an effort to revamp its business, the retailer ended its long-running partnership with Sephora—a move that some experts believe may have further weakened its ability to attract foot traffic. Despite efforts to stabilize, JCPenney has continued to struggle with declining sales and shifting consumer habits.

More Store Closures on the Way

Now, JCPenney is preparing to close an additional eight stores in 2025, with locations in multiple states set to shut down. According to SB360 Capital Partners, the company managing the liquidation sales, these stores will close by mid-year.
The affected locations include:

  •  The Shops at Tanforan – San Bruno, CA
  •  The Shops at Northfield – Denver, CO
  •  Pine Ridge Mall – Pocatello, ID
  •  West Ridge Mall – Topeka, KS
  •  Annapolis Mall – Annapolis, MD
  •  Asheville Mall – Asheville, NC
  •  Mall at Fox Run – Newington, NH
  •  Charleston Town Center – Charleston, WV

A JCPenney spokesperson confirmed the upcoming closures but emphasized that the company does not plan to significantly reduce its store count beyond these locations.

As brick-and-mortar retailers continue to adapt to the evolving retail landscape, JCPenney’s future remains uncertain. Whether the company can pivot successfully or face further downsizing will depend on its ability to attract modern shoppers in an increasingly digital world.
