Popular Store Shutting Down in South Carolina—Hundreds of Locations Closing Nationwide
A well-known retail chain with locations throughout South Carolina is preparing to shut down multiple stores as part of a large-scale wave of closures across the country. The company recently announced that more than half of its locations will close in the coming months due to ongoing financial struggles and bankruptcy proceedings.
Popular Retailer to Close Multiple Locations Across South Carolina
In a statement, the retailer called the decision “difficult” but necessary to create a more sustainable future. Court filings confirm that closures will span 49 states, with South Carolina expected to be among them.
Joann, the popular fabrics and crafts retailer, is set to shutter more than half of its 800 stores as it navigates bankruptcy.
Bankruptcy Woes Force Major Downsizing
The company initially filed for bankruptcy in early 2024 and attempted to restructure in hopes of recovery. However, continued financial setbacks—including declining sales and inventory challenges—led to a second bankruptcy filing last month.
Legal filings show that the retailer had been seeking a buyer but identified a large number of underperforming stores that were unlikely to be part of any future sale. As a result, around 500 locations across the country will soon close their doors for good.

South Carolina Communities Prepare for Retail Shakeup
This latest wave of closures reflects a broader trend of economic challenges facing brick-and-mortar retailers. Rising inflation and shifting consumer shopping habits have forced many businesses to downsize or shut down entirely.
Joann isn’t the only major retailer making cuts—other chains, including Kohl’s and Macy’s, are also scaling back in 2025. Industry analysts predict that more than 15,000 retail stores will close nationwide this year, more than doubling the total closures from 2024.
