Beloved Retailer Announces Massive Closures

In a statement, the retailer called the decision "difficult" but necessary to ensure a more sustainable future. While an official list of affected locations has not been released, court filings confirm that closures will impact all 50 states, with North Carolina likely among them.

Joann, the fabrics and crafts retailer, is closing more than half of its 800 stores in the coming months as it continues to navigate the bankruptcy process.

Financial Struggles Lead to Second Bankruptcy Filing

The chain first filed for bankruptcy in early 2024 but attempted to recover by restructuring its business. However, ongoing financial issues, including inventory shortages and declining sales, forced the company to file for bankruptcy again last month.

Documents reveal that the retailer had been searching for a buyer but identified a significant number of underperforming stores that were unlikely to be included in any potential sale. As a result, those locations—totaling around 500 nationwide—will soon close their doors.

North Carolina Shoppers Brace for More Closures

This announcement is part of a larger trend of retail struggles as inflation and shifting consumer habits impact brick-and-mortar stores. Many shoppers have reduced discretionary spending, making it difficult for some retailers to stay afloat.

In addition to this closure, major chains like Kohl’s and Macy’s are also downsizing in 2025. Experts predict more than 15,000 retail stores will shut down nationwide this year—more than twice the number that closed in 2024.

North Carolina shoppers and employees are now waiting for official confirmation on which locations will be affected, as another well-loved store prepares to disappear from communities across the state.
