In a statement, the retailer described the decision as "challenging" but necessary to secure long-term stability. Court documents indicate that closures will take place across 49 states, with Florida expected to be among them.

Joann, the fabrics and crafts retailer, is set to close more than half of its 850 stores as it continues efforts to reorganize amid bankruptcy.

Ongoing Financial Struggles Force Major Downsizing

The company originally filed for bankruptcy in early 2024 and attempted to recover by restructuring its operations. However, persistent financial troubles—including declining sales and supply chain disruptions—led to a second bankruptcy filing last month.

Legal filings reveal that the retailer had been searching for a potential buyer but determined that a large number of underperforming stores would not be included in any sale. As a result, approximately 500 locations across the country are slated to close permanently.

Florida Shoppers Brace for Retail Closures

These closures reflect a larger trend of financial difficulties facing brick-and-mortar retailers. Rising inflation, changes in consumer spending habits, and the continued growth of online shopping have put pressure on traditional retail stores, leading to widespread downsizing.

Joann is not the only major chain making cutbacks—other retailers, including Kohl’s and Macy’s, are also reducing their store counts in 2025. Analysts predict that more than 15,000 retail stores will shut down nationwide this year, more than doubling the closures from 2024.
