A Volusia County family’s New Year’s Eve celebration turned into a nightmare when celebratory gunfire riddled their home with bullets, nearly killing a woman as she slept.

A Narrow Escape

The incident occurred just after midnight in Daytona Park Estates. A family of four was asleep when multiple rounds struck the residence. One bullet pierced the bedroom wall and landed under a woman’s pillow. Investigators noted that pieces of drywall were scattered across the room from the impact, and five bullet holes were later discovered on the home's exterior.

Arrests Made Following Investigation

Volusia Sheriff’s deputies identified three individuals allegedly responsible for the gunfire. Axel Gomez, 21, was arrested for shooting into an occupied dwelling. Two others, Amy Gomez and Ken Newbold, both 25, face charges for the reckless discharge of a firearm in a residential area.

A Warning Against Illegal Traditions

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office is using this near-tragedy to remind the community that firing weapons into the air is both a crime and a public safety hazard. While the suspects intended to celebrate the holiday, their actions resulted in felony charges and a brush with death for their neighbors. Authorities emphasized that "celebratory gunfire is illegal and can have deadly consequences."
