Florida Man Arrested After Driving Car Engulfed in Flames
A Florida man faces DUI charges after an incident on Friday involving a vehicle that was actively on fire. Deputies from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office discovered the situation while responding to a brush fire sparked by the car.
A Dangerous Commute
Witnesses reported seeing Patrick Rinaldi driving along U.S.-192 as heavy smoke poured from his vehicle. According to reports, Rinaldi stopped briefly but then continued driving, even as the car became completely engulfed in flames. His wife was also a passenger during the ordeal.
Regarding the rescue, the Sheriff noted, "Eventually he had to stop because of the fire, and when doing so was barely able to help his wife escape from the fire!!"
Signs of Impairment
Deputies noted a strong smell of alcohol and observed that Rinaldi had "bloodshot, watery, and glassy" eyes. The arrest affidavit further detailed his condition:
"His movements were slowed and sluggish, and he was swaying while in a staggered stance. His speech was slowed, low, and slurred."
Refusal and Arrest
Rinaldi claimed he only consumed one beer, despite authorities finding a liquor bottle on the floorboard. He eventually refused a sobriety test.
The Sheriff summarized the arrest by stating, "As a result of his actions Rinaldi was charged with DUI and Refusal to Submit and subsequently took a ride in our Courtesy Shuttle to Ivey’s Iron Bar Lodge where he got immediate occupancy!!"
