Florida Teen Arrested After High-Speed Chase Ends in Crash With Mail Truck
An 18-year-old from Margate is behind bars following a chaotic multi-city pursuit that ended with a collision involving a U.S. Postal Service vehicle. Joseph Dexter Raymond Watson IV faces several felony charges after allegedly attempting to evade detectives across Broward County.
The Initial Pursuit
The incident began on January 20 when Margate Police, acting on a tip regarding narcotics, spotted Watson in a rental car near Rock Island Road. When officers tried to pull him over, Watson reportedly sped off. Authorities say he drove recklessly through residential areas in Margate and North Lauderdale, ignoring red lights and weaving through traffic.
Collision With Law Enforcement
The situation turned violent when Watson allegedly reversed his car at high speed, slamming into a detective’s patrol vehicle. This act led police to escalate the chase, citing "aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer."
Foot Chase and Arrest
The pursuit ended on Oakland Park Boulevard after Watson crashed into a mail truck. Police say Watson and a 17-year-old passenger abandoned the car and tried to hide inside the mail truck before fleeing on foot. The pair was eventually caught while attempting to enter an Uber.
The U.S. Postal Service has indicated it "wished to pursue charges" regarding the unauthorized entry into their vehicle. Watson is currently being held without bond at the Broward County Main Jail.
