A Best Buy employee has been charged with fraud after police say he used the manager's register code to give himself massive discounts on items, which added up to a loss of a little over $118,000 for the store.

According to the report, the store manager noticed strange sales numbers on December 18th, 2024. When he looked closer at the reports, he found the employee Matthew Lettera had been using one of the manager's register code with a total of 149 times to make items cheaper, like 99% cheaper.

It was four years into Lettera's career at Best Buy before he started up with this scheme, where he had dozens of highly discounted transactions that went unnoticed for months, which went unnoticed and eventually, he got some employees in on the ordeal.

After months, the store manager noticed, and contacted his higher ups, who sent some private investigators to figure out what was happening. The investigators determined it was Lettera, and police got involved.

Police were able to track the purchases like the MacBooks purchased at 99% off, where they went straight from the Best Buy straight over to the local pawn shops. The shops cooperated, showing that Lettera brought them in and exchanged them for cash.

In total, Lettera used the code 149 times, 97 of which were for himself, and 52 times for others.

I suspect there will be some other employees in jail, or at the very least, in the unemployment line.
