Doctors Warn Illinois People To Never Sleep With A Fan On
For many people, a fan on a hot summer’s night is absolutely necessary to getting a good night's rest. The air-conditioning is sometimes just not enough to suffice. However, medical experts advise against the use of fans during the hot summer weather. So, why should you be cautious about turning on your fan during the sweltering summer nights?
PhD health expert Dr Naheed Ali said running a fan in the bedroom all night can 'create hidden stress on the body'. Keeping the fan all night can dry the sinus and throat, leaving you feeling dry and congested in the morning.
For Those With Asthma Or Allergies…
Allergies during the summer months are the worst. If you're still dealing with those stubborn allergens, you may want to reconsider the use of your fan during your every-night snooze fest.
And to those with asthma, this one is also for you. Running a fan overnight can stir up dust particles, lint, dander, and pollen in your bedroom. The continuous airflow from your fan keeps these in the air, eventually leading to you breathing them in while you sleep. This can cause mild chest tightness, along with coughing and sneezing the morning after.
What It Can Do To Your Body...
Although a fan on at night cools you off under all of those sheets, it can also create hidden stress on your body. Since fans produce constant airflow, they can easily dry out your sinuses and throat. Eventually, thick mucus builds up in your system, causing allergens and other irritants to get stuck in your airways. This leads to clogged sinuses, a scratchy voice, and coughing, which not only linger during the next morning but last throughout your entire day.
The Effect On Your Muscles
Sleeping with a constant stream of cool air can also result in muscle stiffness. This constant cool air on your body causes your tissue to drop in temperature, leading to muscle tightening. Because of this, you may wake up the next morning with sore shoulders or a sore neck. Luckily, you can get rid of this by stretching or taking a warm shower.
Sleep Smarter And Breathe Easier
Even though a fan might feel like your best friend on hot muggy nights, it can quietly wreak havoc on your body and aggravate allergies, asthma, and muscle stiffness. Instead of relying on a fan, consider other ways to keep cool, like breathable sheets or proper ventilation. Your body (and your sinuses) will thank you for making a healthier choice for a better night’s sleep.
