Illinois Man Denied Pre-Trial Release After DUI Crash and Police Chase
A Batavia man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he caused two crashes and led police on a high-speed chase while intoxicated.
Incident Began With Hit-and-Run Report
Michael J. Fox, 28, has been charged with aggravated DUI and two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced Wednesday.
The events unfolded Monday evening after Warrenville police responded to a hit-and-run near Route 59 and Joliet Street in West Chicago around 5 p.m. While heading to the scene, an officer spotted the suspected vehicle and attempted a traffic stop.
High-Speed Chase Through Warrenville
Prosecutors said Fox initially pulled over at Williams Road and Butterfield Road but sped off as the officer approached. With emergency lights activated, the officer pursued him as speeds reportedly reached 70 mph.
The chase ended when Fox ran a red light at the intersection of Route 59 and Butterfield Road in Warrenville and collided with a Honda CRV carrying two people. The victims sustained minor injuries and were transported to a hospital.
Police Report Strong Signs of Intoxication
After the crash, officers reported that Fox’s breath smelled of alcohol and that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy. A bottle of alcohol was allegedly found near the driver’s seat. A breathalyzer test later showed his blood alcohol concentration was 0.267—more than three times the legal limit.
Facing Multiple Charges
In addition to the felony charges, Fox was cited for several misdemeanors and traffic offenses, including reckless driving, DUI, failure to reduce speed, and having open alcohol in the car. He was denied pre-trial release and remains in custody.
State’s Attorney Berlin condemned the incident, saying, “The allegations that Mr. Fox fled a crash, led police on a high-speed chase, and then caused another crash while intoxicated are shocking.”
Fox is scheduled to appear in court again on September 8.
