Teen Arrested After Bomb Joke Delays Spirit Airlines Flight in Florida
A 16-year-old boy’s Florida vacation ended in handcuffs and a trip to juvenile detention after a joke on board a Spirit Airlines flight was taken as a serious threat.
Flight Panic Over Ill-Timed Remark
The teen, who was returning to Kansas City with friends, allegedly said “I have a bomb in my pocket” while the plane was preparing to take off from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Monday afternoon.
The comment caused immediate concern. A nearby passenger reported it, triggering an emergency response. Authorities evacuated all passengers from Flight 1332, and the aircraft was moved to a secure location to be inspected by law enforcement. No bomb was found.
Authorities Respond Swiftly, Plane Grounded for Hours
Broward County Sheriff’s deputies quickly removed the teen from the aircraft and took him into custody around 3:15 p.m. He was later charged with making a false bomb threat and causing more than $1,000 in damage. Spirit Airlines stated the plane was thoroughly searched and eventually cleared for takeoff, though the departure was delayed by over five hours — from the original 2:37 p.m. schedule to 7:44 p.m.
Spirit estimated the disruption caused about $50,000 in delays and operational impacts. A TikTok video taken inside the cabin reportedly shows the moment the teen was escorted off the flight while passengers were rerouted to the tarmac.
Parents Say It Was a Joke Gone Wrong
The boy’s parents have spoken out in defense of their son, claiming the remark wasn’t a serious threat. His mother told the Miami Herald that the comment was simply a bad joke made about masculinity, and his father asked the judge for leniency, saying, “He was acting as an immature 16-year-old.”
The teen’s attorney questioned whether the comment was even made on the plane, citing lack of evidence about where the statement occurred. However, the judge was not swayed and ordered the boy to undergo a psychological evaluation while remaining in juvenile custody.
Spirit Airlines Faces Bomb Threat Incidents Again
No explosives were found on the boy or on the aircraft, and no one was physically harmed. However, the incident disrupted travel for dozens of passengers and added to a growing number of false bomb threats affecting the airline. Just weeks earlier, a Michigan man was charged after allegedly phoning in a fake bomb threat when he wasn’t allowed to board his flight in Detroit.
What was supposed to be a routine flight home for the Missouri teen instead became a costly lesson in how a single sentence can turn into a serious criminal matter — especially in today’s high-alert travel environment.
