A 13-year-old girl is being recognized for her courage and quick response after escaping an attempted assault in Carmel-by-the-Sea. The incident occurred on May 6 near Torres Street and First Avenue while she was walking home from school.

According to Carmel Police, the suspect was hiding between two parked cars before ambushing the girl. Rather than panic, the teen relied on jiu-jitsu techniques she learned from the Carmel Youth Center, where she’s been training for three years. She struck the attacker in the foot, knocking him to the ground and giving her the chance to run to safety.

Police Continue Search for Suspect

Authorities released a composite sketch based on the girl's description. The suspect is described as a tall, muscular man, approximately 6 feet in height. Police believe he may have injured his left foot or ankle during the struggle. The community is being asked to remain alert and report any information that could help identify him.

“It was a textbook example of staying calm under pressure,” said Carmel Police Chief Paul Tomasi. “She used her skills to defend herself and get to safety. That’s impressive at any age.”

Community and Youth Center Applauds Her Strength

Local residents expressed a mix of pride and concern following the incident. Richard Cushman, a longtime Carmel local, said, “It’s unbelievable this happened here, but what she did was incredible.”

Keith Padgett, CEO of the Carmel Youth Center, praised the teen’s bravery and highlighted the value of youth self-defense programs. “This is exactly why we offer this kind of training,” he said. “It’s unfortunate this happened, but it’s empowering to know she had the tools to protect herself.”
