Storms are likely later today (Tuesday, March 10) in Davenport and the Quad Cities, and some could turn strong or even severe this evening. Here’s the simple breakdown of what to expect.

Timing of the Storms

  • Morning–early afternoon: Mostly cloudy and mild. Temperatures will climb into the mid-60s.
  • Late afternoon (around 4–5 PM): The first thunderstorms may begin developing.
  • Evening (about 6 PM – midnight): This is the main window for stronger storms in the Quad Cities.
  • After midnight – early morning Wednesday: Storms gradually weaken but rain may continue.

What the Storms Could Bring

Meteorologists say all types of severe weather are possible, though not every storm will be severe.

Potential threats include:

  • Damaging winds up to about 70 mph
  • Large hail (possibly golf-ball size)
  • Heavy rain and localized flooding
  • An isolated tornado (risk is low but possible)

The Quad Cities area is within a Level 3 out of 5 “Enhanced Risk” zone for severe storms, which means storms capable of damaging weather are possible.

Damaging Winds, Hail, and Possible Tornado

Not every storm will be severe, but some could pack a punch.

Weather experts say the strongest storms could produce damaging wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour, large hail, and heavy rainfall that may cause localized flooding in low-lying areas.

Along with wind and hail, there is also a low but possible tornado threat across eastern Iowa and western Illinois on Tuesday evening.

Who Has the Higher Risk?

Areas south of I-80 (including parts of southeast Iowa and Illinois) may see the strongest storms.

Davenport could still see severe storms, but not every storm will reach severe levels.

What Happens After the Storms?

  • Overnight: Storms taper off, but rain may continue.
  • Wednesday: Much cooler with rain likely and highs only around the low 40s with gusty winds.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware on Tuesday evening and be prepared in case warnings are issued.
