A youth ball hockey tournament in Egg Harbor Township took an unexpected turn Saturday afternoon when tensions between players and parents erupted into a physical altercation. The incident occurred during a matchup between the Maple Shade and Philadelphia Cadet A teams at the American Ball Hockey Alliance (ABHA) Veterans Memorial Invitational.
Video footage circulating on social media captures the moment a player driving toward the goal was bumped by an opponent. In response, the player retaliated with a hit, igniting a chaotic brawl as teammates rushed in to defend their sides. The confrontation quickly escalated with pushing, shoving, and punches being thrown before referees and coaches intervened to restore order.

Egg Harbor Township police confirmed that officers responded to the scene and are continuing to investigate the incident. Meanwhile, the ABHA Board has taken swift action, suspending both teams involved. Additionally, an assistant coach from the Maple Shade team has been banned from the organization.
The board is set to meet and determine further disciplinary measures that could impact the remainder of the season.
A Call for Reflection and Sportsmanship
Following the incident, both teams issued statements calling their behavior "unacceptable." They have agreed to comply with any penalties the board enforces.
“We urge everyone involved to consider how they can foster a more positive and sportsmanlike atmosphere in the community," the statement read. Additionally, referees will undergo training to better handle and de-escalate similar situations in the future.
