Adoption Fee Waived: Humane Society of Scott County Overflowing With Animals
If you've been thinking about adding a furry friend to your family, now might be the perfect time.
Human Society Waives Adoption Fee
Thanks to a generous supporter, Shelter staff is also encouraging anyone who has lost a pet recently to stop by and check if their furry family member may have been brought in.
Check out this video from QC News explaining the overflow of the shelter.
Why Are They Waiving Adoption Fees?
I knew summer was busy for animal shelters, but I didn't realize just how busy things have gotten at the Humane Society of Scott County.
The shelter says it has been hit with a waive of incoming animals over the past few weeks. Since the start of June, more than 200 animals have been brought through its doors. While many have already been reunited with owners or found homes, dozens are still waiting for a place to go.
One of the biggest challenges is that animal intake isn't always predictable. Shelter staff can go from having a manageable number of pets to suddenly running out of room in a matter of days. In one recent 48-hour stretch, the Humane Society had more than 53 animals arrive needing care.
Staff Looking For Solutions
When the shelter starts filling up, staff begin looking for every possible solution. Some animals are transferred to rescue partners, adoption efforts are ramped up, and foster families are recruited to temporarily take pets into their homes. Fostering doesn't cost volunteers anything and can be one of the fastest ways to free up kennel space.
The shelter is also continuing its Trap-Neuter-Return efforts to help reduce the number of homeless cats in the community before they end up needing shelter space.
All of this comes with a hefty price tag, which is why donations and volunteers are always appreciated.
Sometimes helping an animal can be as simple as opening your home, even temporarily. Right now, every little bit helps.
