Grindhouse Double Feature Friday in The Village of East Davenport

Horror movies have been around since the dawn of cinema, but they’ve evolved throughout the decades. If you look at horror films from today, you’ll see that there are some huge differences compared to those produced in the 1980s and ‘90s, which reflects the differences in audience tastes over time. Indie horror films have also changed over time; while they were rarely seen in movie theaters during previous decades, they’re quite popular nowadays thanks to low-cost filmmaking equipment and distribution methods like the Internet and DVDs.

What's a Grindhouse Film?

Grindhouse is a term used for a subgenre of exploitation films that emerged in the 1970s and early 1980s. They are generally low-budget, with high levels of blood and gore, with emphasis on sexuality and ultraviolence. These movies were primarily screened in independent theaters known as grindhouses, and were often shown between double- or triple-feature attractions—hence their nickname grindhouses.
