Investigation Uncovers Distracted Driving Incident

A Florida sheriff’s deputy, Tristan Macomber, has stepped down following an internal investigation into a crash involving his patrol vehicle and a civilian car. The collision occurred in early November 2024 on County Road 435 as Macomber rear-ended a vehicle that had stopped for a school bus. His department-issued body camera captured the moment the airbag deployed, and subsequent footage revealed crucial details that contributed to his resignation.

Inappropriate Phone Use While Driving

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs report found Macomber was not truthful when initially questioned about his activities before the crash. While he claimed to be checking messages in a group chat with fellow deputies, further investigation revealed he was viewing inappropriate content on his personal phone at the time of the incident.

Policy Violations and Admission of Guilt

Macomber violated multiple departmental policies, including using an electronic device for prohibited purposes, failing to wear a seatbelt, and being untruthful during the investigation. After initially denying misconduct, he later admitted to viewing explicit material while driving.

Despite the immediate remorse Macomber expressed at the scene, his actions prompted significant consequences.
