Creator of Hawaiian Pizza Has Died
The man who created a divide between pizza lovers everywhere passed away last week. Sam Panopoulos was 83-years-old and is credited with inventing the Hawaiian Pizza in 1962.
Panopoulos was 20 when he moved from Greece to Canada in 1954, he went on to own and operate several restaurants with his brothers. In 1962 he took a can of pineapples and for the first time put it on a pizza. The "Hawaiian" name comes from the can itself.
"We just put it on, just for the fun of it, see how it was going to taste," Panopoulos told the BBC. "We were young in the business and we were doing a lot of experiments."
Panopoulos passed away in a hospital suddenly last Thursday.
