A Costly Craving for Luxury Undies

A Colorado woman was left with a staggering $13,000 veterinary bill after her rescue dog developed an expensive taste...for designer underwear. Sarah Oakley, 34, adopted Reta, a terrier mix, from the Harley’s Dream dog shelter in January 2025. But just three months later, Reta’s penchant for Skims undergarments landed both of them in a costly medical crisis.

A Missing Wardrobe and a Medical Emergency

Sarah returned home one evening to find Reta lounging on top of a pile of laundry, but something was missing. Five pairs of Skims underwear had mysteriously disappeared, and Sarah quickly suspected her mischievous pup was the culprit.

Initially hopeful that Reta would simply throw them up as she had done before, Sarah grew concerned when the dog remained sick for more than 24 hours.

Realizing the severity of the situation, she rushed Reta to an emergency vet clinic, where X-rays confirmed the worst: the dog’s intestines were obstructed. Immediate surgery was required to remove the swallowed fabric, leaving Sarah with a jaw-dropping bill of $13,000.

Seeking Help—From Skims and the Public

Sarah, a marketing consultant from Broomfield, has since launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of Reta’s life-saving procedure. She also took a lighthearted approach, appealing directly to Skims founder Kim Kardashian for assistance.

“My first thought was to reach out to Kim Kardashian, but no response yet,” Sarah joked. “Maybe Kim will come through with a solution—like an edible underwear line—because, as Reta’s mom, I just can’t afford to buy Skims anymore unless they’re digestible.”

Despite the ordeal, Reta is now on the mend, soaking up attention and care at home. Meanwhile, Sarah remains hopeful that the public—and perhaps even Kardashian herself—will lend a helping hand in covering the hefty vet expenses.
