Doorbell Camera Captures 78-Year-Old Delivery Driver Struggling—The Internet Raises $900,000 for Him

What started as a normal morning order quickly turned into a viral video that has now raised more than $900,000 for an elderly delivery driver and his wife.

The moment, caught on a home security camera, reminded people everywhere just how powerful a small act of kindness can be.

The viral moment began when Brittany Smith of Manchester, Tennessee, checked her Ring Video Doorbell camera alert.

At first, she admits she was annoyed.

Her daughter’s father had ordered Starbucks again. Something she says they usually save as a reward rather than an everyday treat.

“So I see the Ring doorbell go off, and I'm like, you've got to be kidding me, he had Starbucks sent again,” Smith said.

But when she watched the video, her frustration quickly turned into concern.

The 20-second clip showed an elderly man slowly climbing the steps to her front door. Wearing a red shirt and khaki pants, he carefully held onto the railing while carrying the drink.

“This poor guy is struggling to get up my stairs to deliver my very capable daughter her Starbucks,” Smith said.

The driver turned out to be 78-year-old Richard, who politely asked that his last name not be shared publicly.

Why the 78-Year-Old Is Still Delivering Food

Smith later learned Richard had been working delivery shifts through DoorDash to help support his household.

His wife, Brenda, had lost her job, and the couple needed the extra income to get by.

“I had a job and just losing that we had to supplement it. So I started running for DoorDash,” Richard explained.

The money helps cover daily living costs and medical expenses.

“It’s a medicine for kidney disease. I’m a diabetic and that’s what’s keeping me off of dialysis,” Brenda said.

Across the United States, many seniors continue working past retirement age due to rising living costs and medical bills. Delivery apps like DoorDash and Uber Eats have become a common way for retirees to earn extra income because the work offers flexible hours.

But seeing Richard struggle up the stairs made Smith want to do something more.

A GoFundMe That Shocked Everyone

At first, Smith tried to increase Richard’s tip in the app, but it wasn’t possible after the order was completed. So she posted the video online, hoping someone could identify him.

Within hours, the clip exploded online, racking up more than 2.3 million views. Someone who regularly received deliveries from Richard recognized him and helped Smith track him down.

She showed up at his home and handed him a $200 tip.

But before accepting it, Richard had one concern.

“He wanted to make sure that I was going to be OK if he accepted that money from me,” Smith said.

After learning more about the couple’s situation, Smith started a GoFundMe fundraiser titled “Give Richard a Chance to Rest Again.”

“I had no idea that I was going to gain that much traction,” she said.

Donations poured in from strangers around the world. In just a short time, more than 12,000 people contributed, pushing the total past half a million dollars.

“It’s just really difficult to believe that there’s that many people that are that generous to try to help us… people that don’t even know us,” Richard said.

Smith says the experience has been overwhelming for everyone involved.

“I’m floored,” she said, adding she would “do it over again in a heartbeat.”

The incredible outpouring of generosity may finally allow Richard and Brenda something they haven’t had in years—the chance to slow down and rest.

In fact, the donations have left Richard so stunned that he keeps checking the fundraiser page.

“Richard said he’s not slept in two days because he can’t quit watching the GoFundMe,” Smith said.
