Fire Department Responds to Rare Wind Turbine Fire in Williamsburg, Iowa

We went to a volleyball tournament a few weekends ago that happened to be in a small town in Illinois that was host to a major wind farm.  It's truly amazing how giant these things are. You may have thought the same thing as you passed a semi with one of these blades on its extended bed.

I saw what seemed like a tiny set of stairs that led into one of these turbines and was immediately glad I didn't have to confine myself to that space.  To think about doing maintenance to one of these monsters or worse yet, putting out a fire seemed like hero's work to me.

Common Reasons for Turbine Failure

Keeping moisture low inside a wind turbine is extremely important.  If you don't, then the more common issues can occur:

1) Electrical failures

2) Mechanical failures

According to FireTrace.com, "overall, the data shows that wind turbine fires are relatively rare. Wind turbines catch fire because components inside the turbine fail, generating heat or sparks and igniting flammable materials."

A wind turbine in Williamsburg, Iowa had it's own mechanical error and the fire department had to step in.

"This type of fire is unique and challenging, as there are many factors to consider including falling debris on fire and the turbine blades and unit falling apart overhead. WFD secured the scene to ensure the safety of everyone in the area. Once it was deemed safe, the field fire caused by falling debris was extinguished."
