You’ve probably seen videos of cars with loud horns that sound like they’re coming from a train. It is usually used to scare the crap out of people in a grocery store parking lot but it might actually serve a good purpose. In the video below, you can see a guy may have saved himself from a crash by using the train horn he installed in his Mazda Miata.

What's The Difference Between a Train Horn and a Car Horn?

For starters, train horns are longer and louder. A typical car horn sounds about 110 decibels, which is comparable to standing 20 feet away from your television set when it’s turned on; train horns sound much louder than that (it’s hard to find an exact measurement because they vary so much).

What Types Are There?

There are two main types of train horns: The stand-alone version, which is typically attached to your vehicle’s grill, and train horn kits that attach directly into your car’s air intake system. Which one is best for you depends on whether you plan to install a horn on an old or new car. Kits tend to be cheaper (between $75 and $150) but often don’t work as well as stand-alone horns do.
