Just days after ending their relationship, the man received a gift bag from Bath & Body Works that included a marriage certificate bearing both of their names, along with a photo of his former partner holding the document.

Marriage Certificate Arrives in the Mail—But the Groom Never Said “I Do”

The woman at the center of this unusual case, 36-year-old Kristin Marie Spearman, is now facing a third-degree felony charge for stalking. Authorities say the man, whose name has not been released, had been in a relationship with Spearman earlier this month and the two had visited the county clerk’s office on June 2 to apply for a marriage license. However, the relationship ended shortly afterward following an argument in which the man made it clear he no longer wanted to be involved with her.

Despite the breakup, Spearman allegedly went ahead with plans for a wedding, without telling the groom.

Police Say Ceremony Was Held Without Groom’s Consent or Presence

According to Beverly Hills Police Chief Kory Martin, Spearman convinced a pastor to officiate a ceremony and complete the marriage paperwork, even though the groom was neither present nor aware of any such event. The completed and signed certificate was then filed with the local county clerk’s office.

“I don’t think in 23 years I’ve ever heard of anybody who managed somehow to get married to someone who wasn’t present for a ceremony,” Chief Martin said.

Investigation Ongoing, Questions Remain About Pastor’s Role

Authorities have not yet named the pastor who officiated the ceremony without the man’s participation. The investigation is ongoing, and Spearman remains in legal trouble as officials work to unravel how a legally binding marriage was processed without the groom’s consent.

Under Texas law, both individuals must appear in person with a valid ID to receive a marriage license. This case has raised concerns about loopholes in the process and how they could be exploited.
