An Alvord ISD teacher has apologized to students after admitting she fed a sick kitten to a snake kept in her classroom at Alvord High School.

Alvord ISD Superintendent Randy Brown said the district first received a report on September 3rd from a parent who claimed the teacher fed a kitten to the snake in front of students. After investigating, administrators and the district’s police department determined that the reports being circulated online were inaccurate.

Officials confirmed the teacher did feed a kitten to the snake, but it happened before school began and not in front of students.

Teacher Speaks to Students and Removes Snakes

Brown explained the situation in a statement:
"She later acknowledged this decision to her class and permitted a student, with parental consent, to take the remaining ailing kittens home," Brown said. "The teacher, an experienced educator and animal lover, has apologized to the students for her actions and voluntarily removed all snakes from her classroom."

The district confirmed that the kittens taken home by the student later died.

District Determines How to Handle the Case

According to Brown, the district’s police department consulted with the county’s animal control department and the district attorney’s office. The decision was made to let the school district manage the situation internally.

"We understand that some students and others were upset by this situation, and that is the last thing we want," Brown said. He added that parents and students with concerns or additional information should reach out to school staff.

The superintendent also confirmed that legal counsel was consulted and determined the incident was isolated and addressed.

Unanswered Questions Remain

The district has not yet responded to questions about where the teacher obtained the kittens.
