Previously, the record for most expensive game ever sold was held by a copy of Super Mario Bros, which sold for $114,000 in July.

Now, the record is held by Super Mario Bros. 3, which had a sealed copy sell at auction over the weekend for $156,000. Bidding started at $62,500, with 20 bidders throwing their bids in for the NES game.

Part of the game's value stems from the cover, which has the word "Bros." formatted on the left side of the front, obscuring Mario's hand, whereas later copies re-oriented the move the word to center-right.

The cover only was part of the cost, because a previous copy sold for $38,400. The biggest price raise was the Wata 9.2 A+ rating it was given.

Alongside Super Mario Bros. 3, a copy of Pokémon Red sold became the most expensive Pokémon game sold when it was purchased for $84,000 during Friday's auction, with a Wata 9.8 A++ rating.
