Dangerous Heat Returns to the Quad Cities Monday With Storms

This is a tough forecast of what will happen within the next 24 hours. We will either see extreme heat or significant thunderstorms, maybe a combo for some areas. Here's what experts are predicting:

Crazy Weather In The Quad Cities

Temperatures are expected to climb into the low to mid-90s Monday afternoon, but with tropical-level humidity, it will feel much hotter. Heat index values are forecast to range from 105 to 115 degrees, making it dangerous to spend long periods of time outdoors.
The Quad Cities saw extreme heat on Sunday, with heat index values soaring to 18 degrees in Muscatine, 121 degrees in Burlington, and 127 degrees in Macomb. Moisture from mature corn and soybean fields is also adding to the humidity, making the air feel even more oppressive.

Storm Chances Monday Afternoon and Evening

There is a chance for thunderstorms later Monday, but exactly where they develop remains uncertain.

Some forecast models keep the strongest storms east of the Quad Cities, while others suggest they could move closer to the Mississippi River. If storms do develop over the area, they could produce damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall, and localized flash flooding.

Forecasters say the situation will need to be monitored throughout the day as conditions could change quickly.

Relief Is on the Way

A cold front moving through Monday night is expected to bring an end to the dangerous heat.

By Tuesday, temperatures will fall into the mid-80s with much lower humidity, making it feel significantly more comfortable. Hazy skies are also possible Monday night into Tuesday as wildfire smoke from Canada and the northwestern U.S. drifts into the region, though it's still unclear how much it will affect air quality.

Looking Ahead

Dry weather is expected through Wednesday, and much of Thursday before another system arrives Thursday night into Friday. At this time, severe weather is not expected, but scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are possible.

Even better news? A cooler, more comfortable weekend is expected across eastern Iowa and western Illinois.
