If you hear loud booms echoing across the Quad Cities late this week, don’t panic. It’s not an emergency, and it’s definitely not something to be scared about.

Why You’ll Hear Cannon Fire This Week

According to the City of Rock Island Government, cannon fire will be heard coming from the Rock Island Arsenal on Thursday and Friday, March 5 and 6, around 10 a.m. The firing is part of a formal farewell ceremony honoring Maj. Gen. Mark McCormack, Deputy Commanding General for Operations with the First Army.

A Long-Standing Military Tradition

While it may sound intense, the cannon fire is ceremonial. Known as a gun salute, this tradition dates back centuries and is used by military installations around the country to recognize command changes, retirements, and distinguished service. The cannons use blanks, are carefully coordinated, and are fired in a controlled setting as a sign of respect and honor.

Nothing to Worry About — Just History in Action

Rock Island Arsenal has a deep connection to artillery and military history, stretching back more than 150 years. Because it remains an active Army post, ceremonies like this still happen today — even if they momentarily startle nearby residents.

So if your dog barks, your windows rattle, or you pause mid-coffee, wondering what that noise was, rest easy. It’s simply military tradition on display: loud, brief, and completely safe,  happening right here in the Quad Cities.
