What started as a simple Marathon Monday jog turned into a terrifying life-or-death rescue for one Boston man and his adventurous goldendoodle.

Hans Nagrath was out enjoying a run along the Charles River with his 2-year-old dog, Benny, when the playful pup spotted two geese and made a decision that nearly ended in disaster.

A Dash To Catch The Geese

Benny, who was off-leash at the time, suddenly bolted straight for the birds and launched himself into the chilly river without hesitation.

Nagrath says panic set in instantly.

“I kept yelling, ‘Benny, come back!’” he recalled. But Benny was fully locked in on his mission and completely ignored every call.

For Nagrath, watching his dog struggle in the cold water was unbearable.

“We’ve had him for two years. He’s like a son to us,” he said.

As Benny paddled farther out, Nagrath says he wasn’t thinking clearly—just imagining the worst.

“I was picturing Benny drowning, and I just didn’t think.”

Without stopping to look for safer options, he jumped in after him.

Swimming In The Cold Waters To Save Benny

That decision quickly became dangerous.

The Charles River was only about 40 degrees, and within minutes, the freezing water started taking a serious toll.

“The cold knocked the wind out of me,” Nagrath said. “I couldn’t breathe properly.”

As he fought to stay afloat, things got even scarier.

He says he got within about 10 feet of Benny before realizing his arms were starting to give out.

“I thought, ‘Oh God, I can’t move my arms, and I don’t know what’s going to happen.’”

At that moment, Nagrath feared he might not make it out.

Still, he managed to reach Benny and kept the dog afloat by pushing up his back legs whenever he started to sink.

The Community Steps In To Help

The two slowly made their way toward a nearby pier, where Nagrath screamed for help.

People nearby rushed in, pulling Benny to safety first before helping Nagrath climb out of the freezing water.

Once back on land, kind strangers wrapped Benny in a Boston Marathon blanket to help warm him up.

Miraculously, both dog and owner were okay.

Looking back, Nagrath says he realizes he should have asked someone to grab a flotation device or call 911 before jumping in.

“There was definitely a moment where I knew I needed help,” he said.

But while Nagrath was left replaying the terrifying rescue in his head, Benny seemed to have learned absolutely nothing.

“On the walk home, he was still ready to chase geese,” Nagrath laughed. “And I was like, no… this is not happening again.”
