Vern, The Mayor Of Gaines Street, Has Passed Away
We've learned a day-brightening mainstay of hundreds of people's commutes has passed away.
Vern Carpenter was known as The Mayor Of Gaines Street, a title bestowed upon him by neighbors and commuters who passed by his home where he'd sit on his porch daily, waving and shouting encouragements to those on their way to work, or wherever their day might take them.
We've learned from his family that on March 16th, Vern passed away surrounded by family.
In August of last year, Vern suffered a stroke and was away from his post as he recovered. The community rallied and sent him a few thousand get-well cards, which made him emotional and helped encourage him on his recovery.
Our Last Interview With Vern:
When he returned home in October, a drive-by parade was organized to help celebrate his return home, return to his post where he'd brighten people's days, and to celebrate his birthday.
Vern was the recipient of WQAD's Pay It Forward, which resulted in some sage advice from the Mayor himself.
"It don't cost nothing for a smile, or a wave, you know, it's just free. Sometimes people will be down and it'll bring a smile to their face, and it makes everyone's day a little better."

From Vern's family:
Vernon’s passing has left a tremendous void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. The medical bills from his time in assisted living, hospital stays, surgeries, and now funeral expenses have created a significant financial burden. As his family, we are reaching out to the community that meant so much to Vernon. If you knew him, or if his story touched your life, any support you can offer would be deeply appreciated. No amount is too small, and every contribution will help us honor Vernon’s memory and legacy. Thank you for your love, support, and for keeping the spirit of The Mayor of Gaines Street alive.
We'll miss seeing his smiling face waving from his porch.
Rest in peace, Vern.
