A high school in Maryland is dealing with an unusual and costly problem. Students are flushing vaping devices down the toilets, and it is causing serious damage.

At Bel Air High School, officials say the situation has gotten out of hand. Multiple toilets have already been replaced after being clogged beyond repair by discarded vapes.

How It Started

School leaders say students have been vaping in bathrooms and then flushing the devices to avoid getting caught. What seems like a quick way to hide evidence has turned into a bigger issue for the school.

Vapes are not meant to be flushed. They contain plastic, metal, and batteries, all of which can get stuck in pipes. Once that happens, the plumbing system can back up or break entirely.

Maintenance teams have been called in again and again to deal with the damage, but in several cases, repairs were not enough to fix the problem.

The Cost Of The Damage

Replacing a single toilet costs a few hundred dollars, but the total adds up quickly. In one month alone, several toilets had to be completely replaced.

At one point, nearly every bathroom in the school had at least one toilet out of order. That left students with fewer places to go during the school day and created frustration across the building.

School officials say students who are caught could be held responsible for the damage.

What Schools Are Doing About It

To try and stop the problem, the school has started increasing security in bathrooms. Staff members are using metal-detecting wands to check for vaping devices, and supervision has been tightened.

Administrators are also asking parents to have conversations with their kids about vaping, not just because of the health risks, but because of the real consequences it can have on school property.

A bigger issue

This situation is not limited to one school. Across the country, schools are dealing with similar problems tied to student vaping.

What started as a discipline issue is now turning into a maintenance problem that costs time, money, and resources. And in this case, it has even taken out the toilets.
