There’s a Real-World Pac Man Game in Peoria
Skills you've learned playing the arcade classic, Pac-Man, finally have a real world application.
Peoria-based Caterpillar is celebrating their 95th anniversary. Over the course of several days, they built a 200' by 200' maze, inspired by Pac-Man. The characters will be played by remotely driven Caterpillar equipment, with augmented reality involved controllers.
A promo video for the course shows 4 people with color coordinated helmets as the infamous Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde, as well as Pac-Man himself.
There isn't contact between Pac-Man and the ghosts, but sensors that shut down the game when they get close enough.
“We were able to upload the iconic game board via GPS to our machines. When you look at the overlay of the virtual board on the real board, it’s a 99% accuracy, and with 151 corners in it, that’s pretty impressive,” said Lyons. The game comes also as a celebration for Pac-Man's 40th anniversary.
It's not open to the public currently, but maybe that'll be something we can all look forward to in the future.
