A Japanese high school student was arrested for poisoning his uncle's miso soup in an attempt to kill him because he couldn't stand his snoring.

Attempted Murder Charge Filed Against 18-Year-Old

Authorities in Japan say an 18-year-old high school student from Ichihara, located in Chiba Prefecture, has been arrested for allegedly trying to kill his uncle by poisoning his miso soup. Investigators report the teen became frustrated with his uncle’s loud snoring and decided to take drastic action.

Police say the teen minced up leaves from a toxic oleander plant and secretly mixed them into his uncle’s meal. Oleander contains a dangerous toxin known as oleandrin, which can be fatal if ingested.

Uncle Noticed Strange Taste Before Falling Ill

The incident occurred on July 17 during lunchtime at the family home. The 53-year-old uncle, who is self-employed and lived with the teen and his mother, noticed an unusual flavor in the soup and spat it out. However, he quickly developed troubling symptoms, including numbness in his mouth and stomach pain.

He sought medical attention and was treated for poisoning. Tests later confirmed that his soup contained a lethal level of oleandrin.

Teen Allegedly Confessed Motive to Police

During questioning, the teenager reportedly admitted to authorities that he poisoned the soup because he “couldn’t stand” his uncle’s constant snoring. Police subsequently charged him with attempted murder.

Victim Expected to Make Full Recovery

Fortunately, the uncle survived the ordeal and is expected to recover fully. Police say the investigation is ongoing as they continue to examine the teen’s state of mind and the circumstances surrounding the crime.

Oleander plants are commonly used as decorative trees in parks and along streets in Japan. While they may appear harmless, every part of the plant—including its flowers, branches, and leaves—is poisonous if consumed.

This shocking case has sparked discussion in Japan about youth crime and family tensions, with many expressing relief that the victim’s quick reaction and medical care prevented a tragedy.
