A food recall is getting bigger as health officials investigate a Salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeño peppers from Mexico.

Many Products Including Jalapeños Recalled From Stores

Taylor Fresh Foods announced the recall on August 9 after its pepper supplier, Coast Citrus Distributors, recalled jalapeños because they could be contaminated with Salmonella. The peppers came from a farm in Sinaloa, Mexico, that officials believe may be connected to the outbreak.

The recall includes 20 prepared foods sold at major stores including Walmart, Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Kroger, Hannaford and Stop & Shop. The products were sent to stores in 26 states. Some have “Best If Used By” dates through August 16, 2026.

What Foods Are Recalled?

The recalled foods include pico de gallo, guacamole, salsa, taco dip, burritos, sandwiches and prepared meals.

Not every product containing jalapeños at these stores is part of the recall. Customers should check the product name, size, UPC number, date and state where it was sold before throwing anything away.

How Many People Got Sick?

According to the CDC, the Salmonella outbreak had sickened 345 people in 27 states as of August 5. Thirty-six people had been hospitalized, but no deaths had been reported.

Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Symptoms usually begin within six hours to six days after eating contaminated food. Most people recover within four to seven days.

What Do I Do If I Have This Product?

If you have one of the recalled products, do not eat it. Throw it away or return it to the store for a refund. You should also wash and sanitize any surfaces that came into contact with the food.

Young children, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of becoming seriously ill from Salmonella.
