How Does A Roller Derby Work?

Roller derby is a contact sport that is played on roller skates. The game is played by two teams, each consisting of five players. The objective of the game is for one team's designated player, the jammer, to lap as many members of the opposing team as possible while their teammates try to block the opposing team's jammer. The game consists of a series of two-minute intervals called "jams".

During each jam, both teams line up at the start, with the jammers designated by a star on their helmets positioned at the back. When the whistle blows, the players race around the track. The first player to break through the pack becomes the lead jammer, which means they can end the jam early by placing their hands on their hips.

Once the lead jammer has been established, the jammer can score points by passing the opposing team's players. For each opposing team player passed legally, the jammer scores a point.

Meanwhile, the rest of the players are focused on stopping the opposing team's jammer from passing through the pack. They do this by blocking, hitting, and knocking the opposing players down.

The game ends when the designated time is up or when one team has scored more points than the other. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
