A Phone Call For Pizza Saved A Woman’s Life From Domestic Abuse
Cops in London saved a woman who called and pretended to order a pizza, because she was in trouble but couldn't say so.
Call Handler Saves Woman with Quick Thinking During Domestic Crisis
A police call handler is being praised for her quick thinking after an emergency call requesting a pizza turned out to be a woman in urgent need of help during a domestic violence incident.
Handler Uses Disguised Questions to Get Help Without Raising Suspicion
Harvey continued the conversation, asking the woman to identify whether her children were at risk by using "cheese" if they were in danger. Meanwhile, the woman’s child could be heard crying in the background. Harvey dispatched officers immediately, ending the call quickly to avoid arousing suspicion from the abuser.
"If he threatened to hurt you, tell me pepperoni. If he threatened to hurt the children, tell me cheese," she said.
"Pepperoni," the woman answered.
At one point in the background, a child could be heard crying.
Ms Harvey told her police would be on the way, and to ring 999 again if needed, but said they had to hang up because staying on the phone longer would "look suspicious if you're calling for pizza".
The victim was safely located when police arrived at the scene.
Metropolitan Police Offers Silent 999 Call Advice
(Keep in mind, this is in the UK not the U.S.)
The Met Police also took the opportunity to remind the public how to make silent 999 calls. If you can't speak, pressing 55 on a mobile phone will transfer the call to police. On a landline, if the operator hears only background noise, they will send help.
“Even if you can’t speak, we can still help,” the Met Police said, stressing the importance of knowing how to reach emergency services in tricky situations.
