A growing number of travelers are booking “nakations at sea,” leaving their clothes — and inhibitions — behind. But despite assumptions, these cruises are far from wild or sexual environments.

This One Rule Applies Only to Men

Cruise organizer Kat Whitmire told Business Insider that male passengers must avoid public erections while onboard.“ Men can’t be overly excited. We say that if they start to feel things around moving down there, jump in cold water, or think about baseball,” she said. The policy exists because the company emphasizes that naturist cruising is completely non-sexual from departure to return.

1. Do All Passengers Have To Be Nude?

Despite the name, passengers aren’t required to be nude at all times. Many feel comfortable shedding layers while sunbathing or swimming, but newcomers who prefer staying dressed are welcome. According to the company, most guests eventually feel more relaxed without clothing, but it’s never mandatory.

2. Is Clothing Ever Required?

While clothing is optional in many parts of the ship, certain areas have specific rules. The formal dining room requires guests to dress. “‘No nips, no bits, and no butts’ is what I always say to remind people of our dinner-dress code,” Whitmire explained. Passengers must also cover up when the ship is docked or positioned near other vessels. Mesh, see-through clothing, and bathrobes are not allowed as substitutes.

3. Everyone’s Just Having Sex, Right?

Bare Necessities stresses that this type of cruise is not the same as lifestyle or swinger cruises. Public sexual activity is strictly prohibited and could result in removal from the ship. Lingerie, fetish clothing, and excessive genital jewelry are also banned to maintain a body-positive, non-sexual atmosphere.

Regular cruise activities — from karaoke to dance classes and excursions — are still part of the experience. The only major difference is simple: fewer clothes and more freedom.
