Most hospitals in the Quad Cities area scored a safety grade of "C" according to hospitalsafetygrade.org. That may sound somewhat concerning, but most hospitals score are a "C" on their website. High performers score an "A" or a "B". Low performers score a "D" or even "F".

Unity Point Health Trinity Muscatine scored an "A" safety grade. OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg also scored an "A".

All the major Quad Cities hospitals including Genesis Medical Center in Silvis, Trinity Moline, Trinity Rock Island, Unity Point Health Trinity Bettendorf and Genesis Medical Center Davenport scored a "C".

hospitalsafetygrade.org measured hospital safety in a variety of areas: Infections, problems with surgery, practice to prevent errors, safety problems and doctors / nurses / hospital staff. On their website you can find the hospital you want to find out about and click through to see how well the hospital did in each area.

I'm not going to even start to look at where each of our area hospitals fell short in the grading process. I don't know enough about it to spend a lot of time analyzing the data and draw conclusions.

What I will say is hospitals can get dinged on their score for poor patient / hospital staff communication and even how a hospital handles their pharmacy procedures. So when it comes to winding up with a "C", it may not have anything to do with the actual practice of medicine. It may have more to do with policies, technology, and interpersonal communications between staff, patients and their families.
