Authorities are searching for a man accused of stealing a boat and taking a naked joyride on the Hudson River after he managed to escape police custody at a New York City hospital.

Suspect Slipped Away While Guard Slept

Stephen Blasetti, 36, slipped away from New York-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia early Wednesday morning, reportedly after swiping handcuff keys from an officer who had fallen asleep while guarding him. Multiple law enforcement sources say Blasetti used the keys to free himself and then disguised himself as a doctor by putting on a white lab coat.

Hospital Surveillance Captures Escape

Blasetti was last seen on hospital surveillance footage wearing blue hospital pants, socks, and the lab coat as he exited the facility around 6:30 a.m. Authorities believe he used the disguise to avoid drawing attention. As of Thursday, he remains on the run.

Blasetti had been under police supervision at the hospital since Saturday after his unusual arrest. Officers say he was high on drugs—possibly methamphetamine—when he attempted to row a stolen keelboat from Manhattan’s Dyckman Marina to a trimaran anchored farther out in the Hudson River.

Charges Pending in Boat Theft Case

Police with the NYPD Harbor Unit arrested Blasetti naked aboard the second boat and brought him in for medical evaluation. He was awaiting arraignment on grand larceny charges when he escaped.

At this time, it is unclear whether any disciplinary actions will be taken against the officer who was guarding him. The NYPD has not issued an official comment.
