Deer Rescued After Getting Tangled in Soccer Net on Long Island
Animal rescuers in Long Island sprang into action this week after receiving a call about a deer trapped in a backyard soccer net. The incident, which happened in an area known for high deer activity, had neighbors worried for the animal’s safety.
Rescuers Work Quickly to Free the Animal
The Strong Island Animal Rescue League responded to the report and arrived to find the deer tightly tangled in the netting. Rescuers carefully worked to free the animal without causing further harm. According to the rescue team, time was critical as the deer was panicked and could have injured itself while struggling to escape.
Deer Escapes Without Serious Injuries
Fortunately, once the netting was removed, the deer was able to get back on its feet. Rescuers noted that the animal showed no signs of broken bones or major injuries. Not long after being freed, the deer was spotted nearby eating on a hillside, appearing calm and healthy. The team said this was the best possible outcome, as rescues don’t always end so smoothly.
State Rules Limit Rescue Options
One challenge the team faced during the operation was that New York law does not allow animal rescuers to use tranquilizers or sedatives on deer. That meant the rescuers had to complete the entire process by hand while keeping both themselves and the animal safe.
Reminder for Homeowners
Strong Island Animal Rescue took the opportunity to remind the community about the dangers that leftover sports equipment can pose to wildlife. They urged families to take down soccer nets and similar items when they are not in use. “Something as simple as putting away a net can save an animal’s life,” the group emphasized in a statement.
