The Quad City Hockey Association (QCHA) is opening the rink to newcomers this weekend, offering a cost-free introduction to one of the region's most popular sports. Families are invited to bring their children to The River’s Edge on Saturday, January 3, 2026, for a hands-on session on the ice.

A Risk-Free Start to the Sport

This event is specifically designed for children between the ages of 4 and 9 who are curious about hockey but have not yet tried it. The program removes the barriers to entry by providing professional instruction and access to gear at no cost to the participants.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for kids to hit the ice, have fun, and learn the basics of hockey, and best of all, it’s completely FREE!" noted the QCHA.

What to Expect on Game Day

The session runs from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM at 700 W. River Drive. Parents do not need to worry about their child's skill level, as the event focuses on comfort and basic fundamentals in a low-pressure environment.

"This Try Hockey for Free event is designed to provide kids ages 4 to 9 the opportunity to try hockey in a FUN, safe environment with trained coaching staff," the organization stated. "No experience necessary! There will be plenty of assistance on hand to be sure your child has the best first hockey experience and answer any questions you might have."

Equipment and Registration

While families are encouraged to bring what they can, the QCHA provides loaner skates and limited equipment to ensure every child can participate safely.

"Whether your child has never stepped on the ice or is just curious about trying hockey, our friendly and trained coaching staff will be there to make their first experience a great one," the QCHA added. "No prior skating or hockey experience is needed — just bring kids ready to have fun!"
