A lawsuit says there's a McProblem with the McRib.

A class-action lawsuit in Illinois claims that McDonald's McRib sandwich "does not contain any actual pork rib meat at all", according to NBC Chicago.

The lawsuit, filed on December 23rd, says that the sandwich meat is actually ground-up, low quality pork products like pork shoulder, heart, and scalded stomach, and that McDonald's "knowingly markets the sandwich in a way that deceives reasonable customers".

The suit also says that the McRib is among the most expensive individual items on the chain's menu, sometimes costing up to $7.89 at some places, when, according to the suit, pork rib meat is considered a premium cut and lower-grade cuts aren't as valuable.

The McRib has had more comebacks than a 90's trend. It got its start in the 80's and it has done several "farewell tours" over the years. The lawsuit has something to say about that too, claiming the re-releases caused "consumer confusion surrounding the true contents".

McDonald's Claps Back

McDonald's website describes the McRib as "seasoned boneless pork dipped in a tangy BBQ sauce, topped with slivered onions and tangy pickles, all served on a toasted homestyle bun" and defines the meat as a "pork patty".

The chain released the following statement to NBC Chicago.

This lawsuit distorts the facts and many of the claims are inaccurate. Food quality and safety are at the heart of everything we do – that’s why we’re committed to using real, quality ingredients across our entire menu. Our fan-favorite McRib sandwich is made with 100% pork sourced from farmers and suppliers across the U.S. We’ve always been transparent about our ingredients so guests can make the right choice for them.

The plaintiffs are looking for class certification for anyone who bought a McRib within the last 4 years, as well as damages for class members, restitution, and injunctive relief.

A total of 16 claims are listed in the lawsuit.
