Guy Burgling A Car Finds A Kilo Of Cocaine In It And Calls The Cops
Everyone has a limit for what they will and won't do, and for one car thief, apparently, the line he draws is at drugs - a large amount of cocaine in particular.
It all went down on Tuesday, when an officer from the Barnstable, Massachusetts Police Department was dispatched to the Bay Street Area of Hyannis after someone called in and said that they found a suspicious package containing a white powdery substance. The caller felt that the package's contents were illegal narcotics and wanted the police to intervene.
When police arrived, they brought the man down to the station for a formal interview. He confessed to the officers during his interview that he hadn't "found the package" on the side of the road, but he found it in the back of a car he was burglarizing for valuables.
He told officers how he planned to steal the car originally. He went as far as prying the steering column open to manipulate the ignition cylinder and start the engine. When he couldn't get the car to start, that's when he decided to just take anything of value from the car. It was when he was rooting around in the trunk that he lifted a spare tire to find a spare tire with a Target grocery bag underneath with the duct taped package.
He realized the package was most likely drugs, and was scared he would face some big charges if he got caught with them, and the man panicked. Unsure how to dispose of the find without drawing any suspicion, he decided to call the police department directly, trying to make it seem like he was just a good-faith caller.
The man let the police know where the car was, and when they arrived, the man's story all came together. Signs of the attempted theft were evident: the driver’s door handle lay detached on the ground, and the ignition had been forcibly pried open.
Police processed the vehicle, and then processed the package, which they determined to be 1.1 kilograms of cocaine.
After a couple search warrants, and taking control of some cameras in the area, they were able to spot 62-year-old Edward Gillespie seeing the car had been broken into and immediately went to check the trunk.
He saw the package was missing, began pacing back and forth, made a phone call, then started looking even more intently.
Police arrested him, then conducted a search of his home, which turned up more; 38 grams of cocaine, 68 grams of amphetamines (Adderall), roughly $10,000 in cash, various packaging materials, and a digital scale.
Giillespie has been charged with trafficking cocaine over 200 grams.
