Iowa Grocery Store Will Use AI Instead Of An Employee For This Task

Your visit to a local grocery store might look a bit different in the coming months.

It's safe to say AI is taking over a lot of stuff we see, though sometimes the 'intelligence' part of it is questionable. It's in social media search bars, it's in stuff we search, I've even see AI significant others. Spooky.

There are a lot of different ways you can use AI and a grocery store chain is taking advantage of that.

According to our friends at KWQC, Sam's Club will be using AI instead of employees to check your receipts before you leave.

If you're a member of Sam's Club, you know you have to wait for employees to check your receipts before you can leave. The company is hoping this expedites the process. Members have said that having to wait for a receipt check is a really big bother to their experience.

So now, the AI is going to do that job for the employees. It pretty much takes pictures and makes sure you paid. Sam's Club says it will be a "combination of computer vision and digital technology deployed in the exit area of the club captures images of carts and verifies payment for all items within a member’s basket". Really it kinda sounds like the grocery version of a speed camera.

The new AI receipt technology is in about 20% of their stores, which is 120 stores. It's expected to be nationwide in all Sam's Club locations by the end of this year.
