Illinois Establishes Artificial Intelligence Cabinet To “Protect Illinoisans”
A new part of state government has been added in Springfield.
Governor Pritzker signed an executive order this week establishing the Illinois Artificial Intelligence Cabinet.
As the capabilities and dangers of AI grow, the Illinois AI Cabinet will help the state assess risks with the technology and advise the state government on how to respond to AI-related incidents. They will help with steps for AI safety and accountability.

Pritzker said:
Artificial Intelligence has enormous potential to transform our everyday lives, but when experts and industry leaders sound the alarm bell, urge us to slow down, and ask for guardrails, we should listen. Illinois has already enacted nation-leading laws that hold Big Tech accountable and today I’m taking executive action to keep this a priority. Congress and the White House need to treat AI risks with urgency, but in the meantime, Illinois won’t wait because it is our foremost responsibility to prepare and protect Illinoisians.
AI Cabinet members will include experts in academia, law, ethics, and governance. Cabinet members will be announced in the coming weeks.
Earlier this year, Governor Pritzker signed the AI Safety Measures Act, making Illinois the first state that requires third-party safety audits of AI systems. It also requires the largest AI developers to "disclose safety practices, report significant safety incidents, and maintain robust compliance processes". The companies have to protect and workers who report safety concerns with the technology.
Recently, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei told CBS News that the huge growth of AI is a warning sign to slow down and put safeguards in place. A former Anthropic researcher, Jacob Coxon, resigned from the company, saying that AI could become "smart enough to kill us".
