But recent research shows that over half of Americans think that the Monday after the Super Bowl should be a national holiday.

In fact, another study found that 22.6 million employees in America plan to miss work the Monday after the Super Bowl this year, setting a record. So you're not alone. It's an uptick from the same survey last year.

Last year, Illinois got lucky since the Monday after the Super Bowl happened to be on Abraham Lincoln's birthday, which is a state-wide holiday.

Legislation To Make It A Holiday

At this time, at least two states have introduced legislation that would make the Monday after the Super Bowl a holiday.

A bill introduced in Indiana this year would make it a holiday, calling it 'American Professional Football Day', and giving workers the day off.

Lawmakers in Tennessee tried to make the Monday a 'de facto holiday', which is a holiday honoring something that isn't widely recognized but is celebrated "in practice" (which is what 'de facto' means).

Citizens all over the country are pushing for it too, there are hundreds of petitions to make the day a holiday.

As USA Today notes, one way to get the Monday after the Super Bowl off would be if the NFL expanded it's season. That way, the already-existing Presidents Day (this year, February 17th) could end up giving people the Monday after the Super Bowl off.

Another push is for the NFL to move the Super Bowl to a Saturday.

Or, Congress would have to pass a bill to make Super Bowl Monday a federal holiday. In June 2021, President Biden did this with Juneteenth. Now, federal holidays would only give federal employees the day off, not the same as an "official" holiday.

Unfortunately for us, it's not looking likely that we will get the Monday after the Super Bowl off this year. So start brainstorming reasons you will call in.
