Are we hardwired to be afraid of things that go bump in the night? Are we just seeking an adrenaline rush? Or does our fear at this time of year serve some higher purpose? Whatever the reason, when October rolls around and you’re watching scary movies and going to haunted houses, why do we like being scared so much?

Do you like being scared enough to make a road trip out of it?

The researchers at Treetopia set out to explore the most haunted states in America
this Halloween season.  They went through all the recorded ghost sightings from "Ghosts Sightings of America" and "Shadowlands Haunted Places Index". Then, they broke it down to every city and location in all 50 states.

In Illinois, the most haunted city is Rockford with a total of 60 ghost sightings as of this fall. Their most haunted location in Illinois is Faust Hotel.

According to HauntedPlaces.org

"This old hotel was reportedly remodeled into housing for seniors. The basement used to hold a bar and bowling alley, but it hasn’t been used since the 1980s. An eerie presence can be felt here, as well as sudden temperature changes and an overwhelming urge to leave the area. The same presence is sometimes felt in the kitchen area and on the 11th floor, which once was the site of the hotel’s ballroom.

The Midwest is a scary place this time of year with several states landing in the top five most haunted in the US. Ohio (2,883 sightings), Michigan (2,671 sightings),  and Illinois (2,496 sightings).
