Georgia Woman Reunites With Fireman Who Saved Her Life 18 Years Ago

Eighteen years ago, a pregnant woman named Mary Mayconich-Beasley was trapped in an elevator with her colleague at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.

The two were trapped and Mary began to smell smoke.

"When there's smoke, there's maybe fire. So all I knew is [there was] a bad smell and nothing comes good out of that, said Mary.

The Hero Arrives

Firefighter Raymond Sikes responded to the call.

"We had people from the tower saying they could smell smoke and then somewhere along the way, we found out we had people entrapped in the elevator. They were at the very top," said Ray.

Ray managed to rescue them both, including Mary's unborn child.

18 Years Later

Despite the harrowing experience, Mary and Ray never had the chance to reconnect until her daughter, Malia, was about to graduate from high school.

"An opportunity came and I just took it. I'm like, okay, this is what I need to do. I need to recognize people that made an impact on my life," said Mary.

Mary took this opportunity to reach out to the man who saved her life, but she didn't even know his name. Eventually, she was able to find Ray's phone number and reached out to him. Ray made it to Malia's graduation, and the reunion between the three was heartwarming.

Malia is now going to college in the fall, but she and her mother plan to stay in touch with Ray. Perhaps, in four years' time, they will reunite again at Malia's college graduation.
